Papua New Guinea is an island nation in the southwest Pacific; an extremely diverse country, with over 800 different languages spoken. Commercial coffee production started in the 1920s, with seeds of the Blue Mountain varietal brought over from Jamaica. The majority of the coffee crop is grown from smallholders who sustenance farm on personal "coffee gardens", as they call them locally. Coffee is then processed by the same smallholders using hand-depulpers and homemade fermentation setups, after which it is transported to Goroka for sorting and dry-milling.
